Following the ddr A installation instructions, with the additional smx instructions (downloading SMX.dll and renaming ddrio-smx.dll to ddrio.dll) and running gamestart-16.bat results in the following error popup:
“The procedure entry point SMX_SetLights2 could not be located in the dynamic link library D:\Games\DDR A\MDX-001-2019042200\contents\ddrio.dll.”
Replacing the ddrio with the original boots up fine.
Additionally, the config tool does not allow binding smx inputs.
Possible solution
Maybe ddrio-smx is outdated with the rest of the project?

Which version of the SMX SDK binary (SMX.dll) are you using?
I suppose you are using something more recent and it seems like BT5 still needs to catch up to that, e.g. there are already a bunch of functions, including the SMX_SetLights2 that is shown in your error, marked as deprecated. Apparently, at least that one was removed on SMX binary you are using.
Can you try an older version of the compiled SMX binaries?

I’m unclear what that actually points to and how to select an older version

I followed this download link:

According to their documentation SetLights2 is actually pretty new. I’ll try with a manually built smx.dll

You are right, my lookup was wrong, the SetLights function is deprecated and not SetLights2.
Then, you are likely using an old version of SMX.dll which does not provide an implementation for SetLights2, yet. Therefore, you might be good if you just get the latest version either pre-compiled or compile it yourself.
I guess the simplest way to build this is to grab a copy of Visual Studios 15 and load it using the .sln file.

Couldn't find any pre-compiled binaries and also no explicit build instructions on https://github.com/steprevolution/stepmaniax-sdk.

I was able to fix everything by building smx.dll from source. It appears the version listed in certain forums is out of date

Might be something we can add to bemanitools-supplement to save others the hassle. Would you mind uploading the one you compiled + info which version this is based on?
Great to hear that this worked out.
